Each of the six volumes follows a numbered index that lists the artists (including those found in other series) and their songs, so you can play them in any order. A word to the wise: Listen first to the compilation's music, and then to the accompanying discography, which will add up to far more than the number of hours in the set.
Jazz For Kids [Jazz & Beyond, 1997]A collection of shorter numbers just in time for the holidays, these are sweetly presented kid-friendly jazz, ranging from old standards to crisp jazz pop. Kid Jazz is a great name for a band, and the band members hit the right note--not too adult, not too kid, just right. A-
First Night: Jazz Etudes and African Dances [Black Note, 1979]The only issue of this unique record-collector's compilation is its sheer exuberance. All the music is etched from small-group ensembles in five countries: Turkmenistan, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Ghana. Clearly the sense of freedom runs rampant, with rapid-fire ensembles adding up to a propelling force and, in two cuts, a raucous African groove. Why there were no people in this record is a mystery. A+
Nigerian Music 2: Flava [Black Lion, 1982]The first eight tracks--a few of them pop, and all rough and tough--are the work of some particularly bad but technically skilled studio musicians. Although the low-end and bass can be a little thick and muddy, there's nothing to suggest that they weren't the best the record company could find, or the best that could be coaxed from their equipment. But the last four cuts, from the legendary King Sunny Ade, are the real thing, and they're astonishing.
