The Windows 1.0 operating environment was developed in Borland Turbo Pascal, version 6.0, for the x86 processor. The graphical code was written in Borland Delphi, version 1.0, for the Windows 3.1 GUI.[11] The code for the operating environment was written in Microsoft Visual Basic, version 3.0, for the Windows 3.1 GUI. Microsoft's Visual Basic is a programming language, similar to C, with a middle-tier language called Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). Microsoft Visual Studio Express Edition for Windows was used to compile and debug. The system was compiled on a Windows NT Development platform, version 3.51.
Windows 1.1, which was released in December 1985, was renamed to Windows 2.0 in April 1986.[22] Windows 2.0 introduced more support for high-resolution monitors and the advent of color graphics. It also featured support for Windows applications, and it was the first DOS operating system with a graphical user interface.[23][24][25] The operating environment also introduced the Hot Keys feature, which is a keyboard shortcut that can be used to run a specific command, which eliminates the need for the user to remember the exact keyboard shortcut every time a command is run.[26] Windows 2.0 also supports audio on Windows applications, including background music and sound effects, and it introduced the Windows 3.0 interface, which is the first appearance of the Windows logo. The operating environment had three releases.[27][28][29]
The first retail version of Windows 8 was released on October 18, 2012 and the second retail version of Windows 8.1 was released on June 2, 2015. It is a new operating system for the x86 family of processors. The operating system runs on the same code-base as Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Windows 8 is a part of the Windows NT family. Windows 8.1 is a release of Windows 8 that improved the user experience. The 8.1 version is composed of four parts: bits of Windows 8.1 that aren't installed yet, apps that will come with the update, apps that are available for download from the Store, and apps that come with the version of Windows 8.1 that you're running. 827ec27edc
