my dad also owned a new model 49 and i had a used one. i shot one of the new ones and liked it. they are very accurate, quick cycling, even with the old double action trigger. still a good and reliable serviceable handgun for target shooting. my dad could not afford to buy either of the used ithacas. the checkered one was sold long ago, but the model 49 that im still familiar with is still in my possession. i have not shot it in years, but have the box, manual, and original box of ammo. i understand a couple of the girls have been turning up. i think it was the deluxe with the gold hammer and trigger. i do not know how to convert the serial number on the ithaca into an exact date. the serial number on my old one is 307xxx, and the one in the box im still holding is 307xxx. i hope that helps. the only reason i know the serial number is because my dad told me the number that day i got the gun and kept it in the safe. as i said, the checkered one is sold years ago. i am not sure i will ever part with the old model 49.
I still have my old ithaca model 49. it was bought new and given to me by my father for my 10th birthday. way back in 1968!!! the serial numbers start with; 307xxx maybe this will help folks establish some sort of dating system for these models. i know it is not worth much in money, but i will never give or sale this gun to anyone. it will be passed on to my grown son.....who i hope keeps it in the family.
