As a film student, I have been committed to watching the biopic of people who have left a mark on history. Whether it be Sean Connery's James Bond, Winston Churchill, Steve McQueen's James Dean or even Leonardo DiCaprio's Mark Zuckerberg, I have found them to be fascinating, sometimes inspiring and mostly iconic. The experiences of these people have given me a unique perspective in film and people, as they are all very different characters who each have their own characteristics. Therefore, I wanted to see if the same could be said about Tupac. Unfortunately, this film is more like a very low budget production with some great actors and poor direction, and in the end failed to give me any great insight into the life of Tupac Shakur.
The decision to make this, was a good one. I was impressed with the talent involved; Boseman, Paul Bettany, Robin Givens, the late Tupac's sister, Yafeu, and Chaka Khan. The problems started when they were given the task of trying to recreate the life of the late rapper. To be honest, they failed, this film loses its potential because of this. The idea of trying to recreate the life of Tupac Shakur is fine, but having three separate screenwriters (Tasha Smith, Scott Sanders and Peter Morgan) spread across the script was a mistake. I appreciate that these are novices to the industry and the characters, but I wanted to see the script as a whole, not the separate parts; this only made me want to skip the parts that they had still not finished.
It would be hard to say this now, but 'All Eyez on Me' is a good movie, which is a rare thing these days. In the summer of 2009 I went to go see it, having seen the first trailer on the way to Warwick's campus and being slightly intrigued. I wanted to see the music of Tupac, I wanted to see how it would be presented and to see how it was going to be received. I was not expecting much in terms of story, I didn't expect that much in terms of acting or story. It was just a Tupac film, that's how I saw it. I did not expect to be moved, I did not expect anything. Maybe I shouldn't have, maybe the trailer had me in mind. I'm not sure.Anyway, I saw the film and I was moved. It was a good film and it was a good telling of his story. It had the great opportunity to show the details and minor events that would not normally make the cut of a biography. It had a great performance from Demetrius Shipp Jr. It had the right music. It had lots of Tupac. It had his t-shirt. It was good.
